Palawan, Philippines – July 12, 2024
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s time to break out the confetti and the pancit! This July 12, the people of Palawan are marking their calendars for an annual fiesta that’s as significant as it is cheeky – West Philippine Sea Victory Day. Approved with an enthusiastic wave of hands at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, this day commemorates the landmark 2016 arbitral ruling that sent China packing in the court of international law.

A Festive Decree with a Message
Ordinance No. 033-23, joyously titled “Declaring July 12 Every Year as West Philippine Sea Victory Day in the Province of Palawan and Appropriating Funds Therefor,” is the brainchild of Provincial Liga ng mga Barangay President Ferdinand P. Zaballa. Supported by a coalition of co-authors, this ordinance passed quicker than you can say “sovereignty.”

BM Zaballa couldn’t contain his excitement as he elaborated on this day’s importance, “It’s a momentous victory that makes us proud to be Filipino. On July 12, 2016, we won against China in the Permanent Court of Arbitration regarding the West Philippine Sea (WPS). This victory is proof of our dedication to peaceful resolutions and diplomatic solutions over brute force and intimidation.”
What’s the Plan, Stan?
In classic Filipino fashion, the celebration isn’t just about speeches and paperwork. The newly minted Sulong West Philippine Sea (SWPS) organization is leading a parade down Rizal Avenue, transforming Puerto Princesa into a sea of flags and smiles. Municipal Councilor Maurice Philip Alexis Albayda of Kalayaan municipality described the event as a unity walk, involving everyone from fisherfolk to the youth, echoing the island-wide sentiment of pride and perseverance.
After the parade, the real party kicks off at the Provincial Capitol Convention Center. Governor Victorino Dennis Socrates will ceremoniously sign the official declaration, making West Philippine Sea Victory Day a staple in Palawan’s annual festivities.

The Bigger Picture
While the Palaweños are basking in their triumph and waving their banners, China, it seems, hasn’t gotten the memo. Despite the ruling, their persistent grey zone tactics and aggressive maneuvers continue to challenge the Philippines’ patience and resolve. But let’s be honest, does anything dampen the Filipino spirit? Absolutely not.
A Nationwide Echo
Palawan isn’t alone in this celebration. In Metro Manila, the Atin Ito Coalition and Akbayan Party are rallying to push for a nationwide recognition of July 12 as West Philippine Sea Day. Their goal? To amplify awareness about the historic ruling and keep the conversation alive about the ongoing maritime issues.
Looking Forward
So, grab your sunblock and your most patriotic outfit, because West Philippine Sea Victory Day is here to stay. It’s a day of remembrance, pride, and yes, a bit of friendly ribbing aimed at a certain northern neighbor. As the Palaweños say, “Kahit maliit, may laban tayo!” (Even if we’re small, we can fight!)
Remember, this celebration isn’t just about looking back at a victory; it’s about reminding the world – and China – that the Philippines stands firm, united, and ready to defend its rightful waters. So, let’s raise our glasses (and our flags) to sovereignty, to justice, and to the unyielding spirit of the Filipino people. Mabuhay!
