Back in the 1970’s, Puerto Princesa, Palawan became host to what was termed as boat people, Vietnamese people who escaped war raging in their country. They have fled their country searching for safe destinations in SouthEast Asia which include areas in the Philippines such as Bataan and Puerto Princesa.

Puerto Princesa welcome these refugees and they were given a place where they can settle in what is now called Viet Village in Barangay Sta. Lourdes which is approximately 13 kilometers from the City Center. The Vietnamese were able to establish a thriving community.

This is where the hospitality given by Puerto Princesa was duly reciprocated. Where in modern times most of the refugees save for a few have left the place, the Vietnamese dish and delicacies have remained and become prevalent as one of the delicacies that people go to as kind of comfort food. The locals have taken a liking with the food they have brought from the land across the sea.

One of the most popular dish that they serve is Beef Stew Noodles which will surely transport you to Vietnam. Some would say its a bit sweeter but hey its now adopted local dish.

You have to pair that with Banh Mi which is otherwise called here as French Bread. You can choose from among several variations of Banh Mi.

On our visit, we choose the healthy option of tofu and pair it with kangkong with beef. Its delicious. You could say this one has its local flair.

And as we said there are a handful of Vietnamese restaurants which now serve similar dishes in Puerto Princesa. It is also being introduced to tourists as part of the local culinary experience. But of course Viet Ville Restaurant remains the original.
