We watched 1521 with great anticipation as it rolls its release nationwide last June 5, 2024. We promoted the movie as much as we can to reach more audiences. The film was almost entirely filmed in Palawan hiring a lot of local extras and we were ecstatic seeing the films scenes with Palawan as background. After the movie, which runs for almost two hours, there was a lively discussion as to the merits of the movie and its supposed rating. The opinions among us are mixed. So here goes our take on the movie:

Overview: “1521” is a historical drama film released in 2023, directed by Michael Barker and produced by Francis B. Lara Ho. The movie delves into the pivotal events of 1521, focusing on the first recorded clash between the indigenous Filipinos and Spanish explorers led by Ferdinand Magellan. The film attempts to capture the cultural and historical significance of this encounter, aiming to offer both an educational and dramatic viewing experience.
Plot and Themes: The narrative centers on the arrival of Magellan’s fleet in the Philippines, the ensuing interactions with local leaders like Lapu-Lapu, and the Battle of Mactan. The film explores themes of colonialism, resistance, and cultural clash. It highlights the bravery and strategic acumen of Lapu-Lapu and his warriors, portraying the complexities of this historical moment from multiple perspectives.
Strengths:
- Historical Context: The movie succeeds in bringing to light an important but often overlooked part of world history. It offers viewers a glimpse into the pre-colonial Philippine society and the dynamics of early colonial encounters.
- Cultural Representation: Efforts have been made to authentically represent the indigenous cultures, including language, attire, and customs. This adds a layer of depth and authenticity to the portrayal.
- Cinematography: The film boasts impressive visuals, particularly in its portrayal of the Philippine landscape. The battle scenes are choreographed with attention to detail, providing a visceral sense of the conflict.
- Performances: The cast delivers strong performances, particularly the actors portraying Lapu-Lapu and Magellan. Their portrayals bring emotional gravity and a personal dimension to the historical figures.
Weaknesses:
- Pacing: At times, the movie struggles with pacing, with certain scenes feeling rushed while others linger without adding significant value to the narrative. This inconsistency can detract from the overall engagement.
- Character Development: While the film excels in depicting historical events, it falls short in developing its characters fully. Some characters, especially the indigenous figures, could have benefited from more nuanced backstories and personal arcs.
- Historical Accuracy: Although the film strives for historical fidelity, there are moments where dramatic liberties seem to overshadow factual accuracy. This can be a point of contention for viewers well-versed in the historical details.
- Dialogue: The dialogue occasionally feels stilted and expository, detracting from the natural flow of interactions. This can make some scenes feel less immersive and more didactic.
We say “1521” is a commendable attempt at dramatizing a significant historical event with a focus on cultural representation and visual storytelling. While it has notable strengths in its portrayal of the era and its central conflict, the film’s pacing, character development, and occasional lapses in historical accuracy somewhat diminish its overall impact. Nevertheless, it remains a valuable cinematic effort for those interested in Philippine history and early colonial encounters.
