Excitement builds as Subaraw Festival activities kick-off this November

Palawan gets another festival this November as the first Subaraw celebration after the pandemic kicks off with activities that will surely bring not only excitement in the streets but also expected to draw in tourists from around the world.

Subaraw Festival is celebrated to coincide with the declaration of the Puerto Princesa Underground River’s addition to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and affirmed as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature of the World last November 11, 2011 which is also the date of Proclamation No. 816 as Puerto Princesa Underground River Day.

Puerto Princesa City is the capital and the Gateway of the Best Island in the World which usher in the activities of Subaraw Festival spearheaded by the City Government and the Subaraw Biodiversity Festival – PPUR Day Celebration 2022.

This year celebration starts with the following activities:

  • November 4 – 6 – 2nd Subaraw Beach Ultimate Frisbee Tournament and Clean-Up Drive at Sabang, Puerto Princesa
  • November 6 – Sabang Kick-Off Program with Thanksgiving Mass, Sabang Community Parade, Subaraw Headdress Contest, Community Field Demonstration, Puppet Show, Subaraw Film Showing, Subaraw Community Jam “Eagles Night”
  • November 8 – Barangay Marinas Community Outreach at Bgy. Marufinas, Puerto Princesa

After November 8, 2022 more exciting events in the line-up:

  • November 9 from 8:00am to 6:00pm – 3rd Subaraw Signature Drink and Mixology Contest, 1st Subaraw Barista Contest, 2nd Subaraw Dish and Cuisine Competition with Preliminaries at Casa Mila on November 7 and the Cook-off event at Astoria Palawan on November 9
  • November 9 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm – Subaraw Drum and Lyre Competition at the City Baywalk – SM City Puerto Princesa
  • November 9 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm – Subaraw Opening Program with Special Guests at SM City Puerto Princesa
  • November 10 from 10:00am to 8:00pm – Subaraw Mobile Legend Competition by Globe at the Mendoza Ampitheater
  • November 10 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm – Subaraw Biodiversity Forum at the NCCC Mall
  • November 10 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm – Subaraw Hip-hop Dance Contest at the Mendoza Park, Rizal Avenue

One of the most anticipated events during the Subaraw Festival is the IronMan 70.3 which will happen on November 13 from 6:00am to 6:00pm. 1,200 triathlon participants from all over the world are expected to attend the event. The whole city will practically host the event as major thoroughfares will be used for the event from the City Baywalk to the RVM Sports Complex.

November 12 will be the Amos Ta Run “Subarun” (FunRun) “Takbo para sa Kalikasan” which will start at SM City Puerto Princesa.

Other events which will happen during the Subaraw will likewise be held to add excitement and participation among all those who would like to participate.

Real Kick-off will start in Sitio Sabang at Barangay Cabayugan on November 6, 2022 since Subaraw is a celebration of the Underground River which is a source of pride for Palaweños as well as one of its biggest tourism attraction for Puerto Princesa and Palawan.

Subaraw is a tribute and homage to nature and reminds us all that it is our duty to protect and preserve her for the next generations. Subaraw got its name from sub (river) and Tara (limestone cliff) and this is its third year since it started in 2018.
