Move over sakura, the Philippines has its own pink superstar in bloom — and surprise, it’s from Palawan! Introducing: the Balayong, or as the rest of the world is now calling it, the Palawan Cherry Blossom.

That’s right. While the rest of the world is deep into spring mode, we’re over here, iced coffee in hand, admiring our very own homegrown version of cherry blossoms — no winter, snow, or maple leaves required.
And get this — the buzz isn’t just happening in Palawan anymore. Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig is showing off a couple of balayong trees at Track 30th and other areas in the bustling business district, making city dwellers stop mid-scroll for a selfie with the stunning sakura-style blooms. Yep, the secret’s out: Palawan’s blush-pink beauty is going national.
The Balayong Magic
The Balayong is a flowering tree endemic to Palawan that can grow up to 15 meters tall (yes, it’s not shy about making a scene). Its flowers bloom a vibrant pink from March to May, before fading into a poetic shade of white — a dreamy transition if there ever was one.
But beyond the aesthetic? Balayong carries meaning. In the local language of herbs, it’s associated with feminine strength, beauty, and love. It’s nature’s tribute to every strong, graceful woman — and a floral reminder that Palawan isn’t just about islands and lagoons.
Imagining Balayong Park in Full Bloom 🌸
Now, let’s picture this: Balayong People’s Park in Puerto Princesa, completely wrapped in a pink canopy. Families taking strolls under the blooms. Couples taking cheesy-but-cute photos (you know the pose). Tourists discovering that yes, we too have a cherry blossom season — minus the snow and 16-hour flights.
With a full bloom expected every March, imagine a yearly picnic-slash-photo-op-slash-Filipino hanami, right in the heart of the city. Throw in a Balayong Festival with food stalls, performances, and cultural pride, and boom — Palawan just leveled up.
Palawan’s Spring Moment
Let’s be honest, it’s kind of hilarious (in a good way) that people are flocking to BGC for a glimpse of Palawan’s floral treasure. We’re flattered. But if you’re going to admire our cherry blossoms, why not come to where they actually come from?
Palawan is more than limestone cliffs and crystal-clear lagoons. We’re now proudly home to the country’s very own version of cherry blossom season — and yes, it’s pink, poetic, and 100% Filipino.
So whether you’re in BGC or (lucky you) in Palawan itself, take a moment, look up, and admire the delicate blooms. Then, tell your friends. Because the world needs to know: the Philippines has cherry blossoms too — and they’re from Palawan.
