Puerto Princesa, the picturesque capital of Palawan, has recently transformed into a vibrant hub of athleticism and camaraderie, hosting four major sporting events that have showcased its capacity as possibly a premier sports destination.
2024 ICF Dragon Boat World Championships

From October 31 to November 3, the tranquil waters of Puerto Princesa Baywalk roared to life with the rhythmic paddling of teams from 24 nations during the 2024 International Canoe Federation (ICF) Dragon Boat World Championships. This event marked the largest gathering in the championship’s history, with the Philippines emerging as the overall champion, securing 11 gold, 20 silver, and 8 bronze medals.
Batang Pinoy 2024 National Championships

Following the dragon boat spectacle, over 15,000 young athletes and officials converged on the city for the 16th Batang Pinoy National Championships from November 23 to 28. This grassroots sports festival featured 30 sports disciplines, with Pasig City ending Baguio City’s four-year reign by clinching the overall championship.
2-Day Motocross Competition 2024

The adrenaline continued to surge on November 23 and 24 as the Sta. Monica Race Track hosted the 2-Day Motocross Competition. The event attracted riders from various regions, thrilling spectators with high-flying stunts and intense races.
BIMP-EAGA 2024 Friendship Games

Culminating the series of events, the 11th Brunei Darussalam–Indonesia–Malaysia–Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Friendship Games took place from December 1 to 5. The games brought together 720 athletes, coaches, and officials, fostering regional camaraderie through sports. The Philippines’ Team A, primarily composed of Davao City athletes, emerged as the overall champion, amassing 31 gold medals.
Sports Tourism Destination
We hope for more bigger and better sports gatherings and competitions as these events have not only highlighted Puerto Princesa’s organizational capabilities but also underscored its potential as a premier sports tourism destination. By consistently hosting such high-profile competitions, the city enhances its visibility on both national and international stages, attracting athletes, spectators, and tourists alike. This strategic focus on sports tourism contributes to the local economy and promotes cultural exchange, positioning Puerto Princesa as a leading destination for future sporting events.
As Puerto Princesa strives to continue to invest in and promote diverse sporting events, it slowly solidifies its reputation as a dynamic city capable of hosting large-scale competitions, thereby fostering community pride and encouraging youth participation in sports. We hope the city will commit itself to sports excellence and improve the hospitality sector to ensure that it remains a top choice for event organizers and sports enthusiasts worldwide.
