Palawan Parade Pizzazz: The Battle of the Best Floats

Hold onto your hats and float your boats because Palawan just celebrated its 122nd Civil Government Anniversary in the most extravagant way possible—with the Float Parade Competition at the Baragatan sa Palawan Festival 2024! Yes, you heard it right! We’re talking about 25 floats, each a moving masterpiece, each vying for float supremacy. And folks, it was a spectacle for the ages.

Float Fiesta Frenzy

Starting from the Immaculate Conception Cathedral and cruising down Rizal Avenue Ext., the parade was a feast for the eyes until 8:00 PM. Picture this: a procession of 25 unique floats, each designed with a blend of creativity, culture, and just a pinch of Palawan magic. The participants, ranging from local municipalities to private institutions, went all out, making sure their floats weren’t just floats but floating artworks.

The Winners’ Circle: Mainland Mayhem

In the Mainland Category, 11 municipalities competed, but it was the Municipality of Quezon that sailed away with the championship, taking home a cool P400,000. Taytay and Aborlan followed closely, snagging the 1st and 2nd runner-up spots with P300,000 and P200,000, respectively. Quezon’s float was a jaw-dropping display that combined local craftsmanship with a dash of flamboyance—think of it as the Beyoncé of floats.

Island Inspirations: The Best from the Isles

Over in the Island Category, Araceli came out on top, also grabbing P400,000. Balabac and Cuyo weren’t too far behind, securing 1st and 2nd runner-up positions with P300,000 and P200,000. Araceli’s float was a tropical dream come true, capturing the essence of island life with an artistic flair that screamed, “We’re here to win!”

Consolation Prizes and Cheerful Tears

Even those who didn’t make it to the top three in both Mainland and Island categories didn’t go home empty-handed. Each participating municipality received a consolation prize of P100,000. Imagine the scenes: artists, designers, and local officials all shedding tears of joy (and relief) as they carted away their giant checks.

The Open Category: A Wild Ride

Now, if you thought the municipal floats were a sight to behold, wait till you hear about the Open Category. Here, five diverse groups competed, and it was Asiano who emerged victorious, pocketing P100,000. Tribu Sugbuanon and Brgy. San Miguel followed as 1st and 2nd runners-up, taking home P75,000 and P65,000, respectively. Consolation prizes of P50,000 went to Sta. Monica High School and the Association of Accredited Tour Operators of PPC, Palawan. Who knew float-making could be such a lucrative hobby?

Judges and Criteria: A Tough Job but Somebody’s Gotta Do It

The panel of judges was no less impressive, featuring artists, editors, and local celebrities like Celeste Anna Formoso, Alvin Bayking, and Ma. Teodora Conde ‘Dinggot’-Prieto. They scrutinized each float based on Symbolism and Relevance to the Theme (30%), Design (30%), Uniqueness and Workmanship (35%), and Punctuality (5%). It was a hard job, but hey, someone’s got to have the fun of deciding which float best captures the essence of Palawan.

Themes and Dreams

This year’s theme was “Mayamang Sining at Kultura…Kakaibang mga Kaugalian at Tradisyon…Tagisan ng Lakas, Talino at Talento…Natatanging Produktong Palaweño,” which, in simpler terms, means celebrating the rich art, culture, traditions, strength, intelligence, talent, and unique products of Palawan. And boy, did those floats deliver on that promise!

Conclusion: Float On, Palawan!

The Baragatan Festival 2024 Float Parade was more than just a competition; it was a vibrant celebration of Palawan’s heritage, creativity, and communal spirit. Whether you were there to cheer on your local municipality, marvel at the intricate designs, or simply bask in the festive atmosphere, one thing’s for sure: Palawan knows how to throw a float parade.

So, here’s to the winners, the participants, the organizers, and everyone who floated along this fantastic journey. Until next year, keep your creativity afloat and your spirits high!
